This production marks an exciting new chapter for Clwb Fideo and demonstrates the creativity and ambition of our community in Mid Wales.

Iolo and Jeno are collaborating with Clwb Fideo members, using clwb fideo equipment and studio space in Machynlleth to create this distinctive and imaginative film. Pinwydd explores themes of ecology, queerness, and anarchism, using an eclectic mix of film styles to deliver a unique cinematic experience. The film is set to be showcased next May at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff.

About the Film: Pinwydd

The story follows Oen, a lamb in Machynlleth, a town haunted by military jet training flights. After being contacted by Pinwydd, Oen embarks on a journey through a pine plantation to find a dimensional rift. After waking to find the forest destroyed, Oen takes revenge by shooting down a warplane with a Skittle, which leads to a confrontation with the mysterious Mr Candy. The film blends surrealism, humour, and poignant themes of resistance and reconciliation.

This ambitious project reflects the innovative vision of Iolo and Jeno, who are experimenting with different film techniques and narrative styles to create a visually and thematically rich piece of work.

Production Details

Filming will take place in two phases: the first shoot will happen in early October, predominantly at Clwb Fideo’s studio space in Machynlleth, with two outdoor scenes. The second phase will be in late November and will include smaller shoots along with a 2-day LARPing workshop to further develop the film’s narrative.

After filming, the post-production phase will begin, involving the creation of a score, CGI, practical effects, animation, and editing. The project is supported by various local organisations, including Chapter Arts Centre, Stiwdio Dyfi, Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture, Umbrella, MOMA Machynlleth, and, of course, Arts Council Wales.

Join the Creative Journey

This project is an excellent example of how Clwb Fideo provides emerging filmmakers with access to the resources and community they need to bring their creative visions to life. If you’re interested in being part of this growing collective, you can sign up via our website: clwbfideo.org. Once registered, you’ll be added to the Clwb Fideo WhatsApp group to stay updated on projects and opportunities to get involved.

We’re excited to see Pinwydd come to life and can’t wait to share it with audiences next year. Stay tuned for more updates from Clwb Fideo and be part of this exciting journey!

Here is a link to their treatment for the project: [Pinwydd Treamtent]

Cymraeg:

Rydyn ni wrth ein bodd yn cyhoeddi bod Clwb Fideo yn lansio ei gynhyrchiad ffilm mawr cyntaf, Pinwydd, prosiect a ariennir gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru ac a arweinir gan yr artistiaid ifanc talentog lleol Iolo Williams a Jeno Davis. This project has emerged from our ongoing consultations with the local community, where young adults have consistently expressed the need for tailored opportunities, spaces for socialising, and support for personal and professional development. Through Sploj, we are responding directly to these needs, creating a vibrant hub for learning, creativity, and social connection.

Have Your Say: Help Shape Sploj!

We want to make sure Sploj offers the kinds of activities and opportunities that matter most to you. That’s why we’re asking young adults across Machynlleth and the surrounding areas to tell us what kind of events, workshops, and social activities they would like to see. Whether you're interested in film, digital skills, social events, or something completely different, we want to hear from you!

👉 Take Our Survey Here 👈

This is your chance to help shape the future of Sploj. By sharing your thoughts in our survey, you’ll be directly influencing the types of events and opportunities we offer. Your feedback is essential to making Sploj a truly community-driven initiative that meets the real needs of young adults in the area.

What is Sploj?

Sploj is a community-driven initiative developed to offer young adults a space to come together, develop skills, and engage in meaningful activities. Whether you're looking to socialise, learn new digital or creative skills, or simply find a place where you can express yourself freely, Sploj is for you. This initiative has been designed with input from the very people it serves, ensuring that it reflects the priorities of young adults in Mid Wales.

Why Sploj? The Consultation Process Behind the Initiative

Sploj is not just another project—it’s the result of over two years of community consultation. In surveys conducted by Stiwdio Dyfi, young adults identified a lack of consistent social opportunities, professional development, and creative outlets in the area. The Young Adults in Mid Wales Survey (August 2023) revealed that many felt socially isolated, with few spaces tailored to their needs. Respondents highlighted the need for regular events, workshops, and opportunities to build skills for future employment. These consultations formed the foundation for the creation of Sploj, which directly addresses these gaps.

What Sploj Will Offer

Sploj will provide a dynamic range of activities and opportunities designed to empower young adults:

Social Spaces: Sploj will host regular social events, including film screenings, live music nights, and meet-ups designed for young adults to relax, meet new people, and build connections. We know from our consultations that there is a strong desire for social spaces that cater specifically to this age group.

Skill Development Workshops: From filmmaking to music production, Sploj will offer a variety of workshops aimed at helping young adults develop practical, creative, and technical skills. Our previous initiatives, like the Digidol Dyfi Digital Project, have shown how important these opportunities are for young people, and we are excited to expand on that success with Sploj.

Volunteer and Leadership Opportunities: Sploj will encourage young adults to take an active role in shaping the programme. Whether it’s helping to organise events or leading workshops, this is a space where you can gain valuable experience, build confidence, and contribute to the wider community.

A Space for Expression: One of the key findings from our consultations was the need for young adults to have spaces where they can express themselves freely. Sploj will offer an inclusive environment where you can share ideas, explore your creative potential, and connect with like-minded individuals.

Have Your Say in What Happens Next

As we build Sploj, we want to ensure that it’s shaped by the community it serves. Please take a moment to complete our survey and let us know what activities, workshops, or events you’d like to see. Your input will directly impact the types of opportunities we provide, ensuring that Sploj reflects the interests and needs of young adults across Mid Wales.

👉 Take the Survey Now 👈

Looking to the Future

As Sploj grows, we aim to continually adapt and expand the programme based on feedback from our members. Our goal is to create a long-lasting initiative that supports young adults in building their skills, strengthening their community ties, and feeling empowered to shape their future.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our consultations and helped shape the vision for Sploj. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes us!

For more information about Sploj and how you can get involved, visit our website or follow us on social media for the latest updates. Together, we are developing a unique and innovative theatre project titled "Owain Glyndŵr, The Prince of Wales." This project responds to the locality's growing interest in theatre, identified through various pilot projects over the past two years. Despite the abundance of Welsh talent in the arts, there are currently very few opportunities for local theatrical engagement. We aim to change that!

Engage Your Group with Our Theatre Workshops

As part of this initiative, we invite local groups from the Dyfi Valley to participate in our short script readings. These sessions offer an informal and accessible way for groups to explore and enjoy the world of theatre. Our workshops are designed to give participants a taste of reading and workshopping test scenes from a play without the pressure of performing live. Leading these sessions will be the highly experienced Paul Corcoran and Helen Jones from Theatre South, who bring over 30 years of expertise in producing and directing.

If you are a local group and would like to participate in the project, contact us!

Workshop Goals

Our workshops aim to:

Provide local groups with a unique 'theatre in development' experience.

Actively involve participants in the creation of a new play centered around a contemporary characterisation of Owain Glyndŵr.

Lay the groundwork for this creative project by incorporating local stories and ideas, informed through exploration and testing.

The R&D Process

The research and development (R&D) process will include:

Reading short scripts.

Developing these scripts in situ.

Engaging in a stimulating rehearsal process.

Contributing ideas and suggestions for storylines and future performance options.

Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate and shape the outcome of this new theatrical work. At the end of the workshops, those involved can choose to test their new performance skills through an audio recording of their reading. This recording will be transformed into a short 5-10 minute radio play by Radio Dyfi, our local radio station.

The Story of Owain Glyndŵr

"Owain Glyndŵr, The Prince of Wales" is inspired by the characters and stories of our locality. The play revolves around pivotal events that compel the characters to act to save their town. Theatre South and Stiwdio Dyfi are dedicated to working with the locality to develop these storylines, highlighting the universal themes found within this distinctively Welsh setting. Currently, there are 25 episode sketches exploring various themes, with a new one published online each week. You can read these here.

How to Participate

If your group is interested in participating in this project, we invite you to book a workshop session. This achievement marks a significant step forward for our growing community of filmmakers in Mid Wales, and we’re excited to share this success with you.

Our Application: Transparency and Community Impact

At Stiwdio Dyfi, we believe in transparency, and we’re proud to share the details of our funding application for those interested. Here’s a glimpse of what we presented to the Laura Ashley Foundation in our successful bid:

Clwb Fideo is a volunteer-run video collective that provides accessible, high-level digital skills opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. We pool together resources and expertise to create independent films with the local communities of Mid Wales. Our application outlined how the funding will allow us to expand our efforts, providing members with access to camera equipment via an online booking system, alongside funding for masterclasses, project management, and coordination.

With the nearest camera rental facility located in Cardiff—an 8-hour round trip from Machynlleth—this funding will make a huge difference in the accessibility of filmmaking resources. Our goal is to enhance the well-being of our members through collaborative filmmaking, which helps develop technical skills, social confidence, and improve mental health.

Aiming High: Project Goals and Outcomes

Our project’s goal is to enable individuals with an interest in filmmaking to develop that interest collaboratively. Inspired by the successes of similar cooperatives in the UK, like the Nottingham and London Film Cooperatives, Clwb Fideo offers a pathway to filmmaking that overcomes traditional barriers such as the need for expensive equipment and skilled labour.

With the new funding, Clwb Fideo will continue to grow its membership, reaching over 100 members by the end of 2025. We’ll also expand our monthly meetings, where members and friends gather to showcase their work through screenings held in village halls across Mid Wales.

Our project isn’t just about filmmaking—it’s about building a community of like-minded individuals in Mid Wales, fostering collaboration, and creating a space for the exchange of skills and ideas. This project contributes to the development of a filmmaking culture in Mid Wales, creating tangible outcomes in the films produced, skills gained, and the social well-being of participants.

Looking to the Future

While Clwb Fideo has been operating informally for over a year with support form the digidol dyfi digital community, this new funding will help formalise our structure, expand our workshops, and provide new opportunities for people to engage in creative collaboration. In the past 18 months, we’ve organised over 30 workshops, including a film school programme for young adults (aged 18-30) and weekly sessions with Ysgol Bro Hyddgen’s LGBTQI+ lunchtime group.

The Laura Ashley Foundation funding will not only support existing members but also help us attract new ones. We’re particularly focused on engaging young adults in Mid Wales, a demographic that has expressed a need for advanced, transferable skills and more social opportunities to combat isolation.

Get Involved: Join the Clwb Fideo Community

With our new funding, we’re ready to welcome more members to Clwb Fideo! We’ve launched a membership form on our website, making it easier than ever to join our growing community. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll add you to our Clwb Fideo WhatsApp group so you can stay updated on upcoming events, screenings, and workshops. You’ll have the chance to connect with like-minded, passionate individuals and contribute to the vibrant filmmaking scene in Mid Wales.

To find out more about Clwb Fideo, visit our website and follow the link to our latest blog post on the project. We’re excited to see where this journey takes us and can’t wait to see the creative projects that emerge from our talented members.

Stay tuned for more updates from Clwb Fideo and Stiwdio Dyfi!

Cymraeg:

Rydyn ni wrth ein bodd yn cyhoeddi bod Clwb Fideo, gyda chefnogaeth Stiwdio Dyfi, wedi sicrhau cyllid gan Sefydliad Laura Ashley, cronfa a ddarperir gan Gymdeithas Sefydliad Cymunedol Cymru. With their leadership, we’re excited to continue delivering high-impact, value-driven projects that improve lives in Machynlleth and the surrounding area.

Meet Our New Trustees:

Sienna LucreziaWith a background in media production and an MA in contemporary theory and culture studies, Sienna excels across music, radio, education, and events, all driven by her passion for creative innovation and global-local collaboration. She leads the Dyfi Dinner Club, where she champions local, seasonal produce and redefines sustainability aesthetics. As the events manager at MOMA Machynlleth, Sienna advocates for cultural enrichment, accessibility, digital curation, and inclusive art creation. Beyond her creative projects, she also serves as the treasurer of Machynlleth Housing Cooperative, bringing her diverse experience to the Stiwdio Dyfi team.

Oliver O’NeillOlly is the director of OOO Studio, a boutique architectural design practice based in Mid-Wales. His expertise in design is complemented by his role as a partner and illustrator for Third Eye Grannies Publishing, where he creates eye-catching children’s books for charitable causes. Olly is also an active member of the local community, working with a team of climbers to develop a new community-owned bouldering centre in Mid-Wales. When not designing or facilitating community projects, you’ll find him DJing and digging deep for the grooviest 4/4 beats.

Nicky ArscottNicky is an accomplished visual artist and poet, with an impressive array of projects under her belt. From creating a giant toilet for WaterAid to installing an interactive maypole at Hay Festival as part of her artist’s residency, her creative vision knows no bounds. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas, Austin, and her poetry comics, created in collaboration with poets from around the world, have been published internationally. We share all of our applications for transparency. Here is what we talked about! For mre info on Clwb Fideo, follow this link

Ashley Foundation: Please describe your grant activity as briefly as possible:

Clwb Fideo: Providing accessible, high level digital skills opportunities through video making in Mid Wales. Clwb Fideo is a voluntary run video collective that is open to all ages and abilities. The collective is run as a membership club and pools together material and labour resources to make independent films with communities in Mid Wales.

AF: Tell us what the money will be spent on in one paragraph

CF: Equipment that members can borrow via an online booking system. The nearest camera equipment rental house is in Cardiff (an 8 hour round trip from Machynlleth). We’ll also spend it on masterclasses, project management and co-ordination.

Our proposal seeks funding to harness the transformative power of collaborative filmmaking, enhancing the well-being of individuals in Mid Wales. By prioritising the improvement of our members' lives whilst also enabling high-level film production, we aim to establish an inclusive and accessible club with the capability for quality output. Here, participants can acquire new skills, cultivate technical and social confidence, and bolster their physical and mental health through collaborative filmmaking. This project is crucial as Mid Wales lacks opportunities for advanced digital skills outside Aberystwyth University. Clwb Fideo serves as an exciting and accessible pathway into filmmaking.

AF: Project aims, outcomes and delivery:

CF: The project's aim is to enable people with an interest in filmmaking, a way of developing that interest collaboratively. We're inspired by the successes of the Nottingham and London Film Cooperatives with leading UK film figures such as Shane Meadows (This is England) emerging from a project similar to Clwb Fideo in the West Midlands. Overcoming the typical challenges associated with filmmaking is a vital aspect to Clwb Fideo—such as the need for skilled labour and expensive equipment—Clwb Fideo offers affordable equipment access through a booking system. It also establishes a community of like-minded individuals in Mid Wales, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing. High-level skill development is facilitated through masterclasses. Clwb Fideo yields tangible outcomes in the films produced, the transferable skills developed, the development of a mid Wales film culture and vibrant arts scene, while contributing to the enhanced well-being of its participants.

Monthly members and friends meetings showcase work through screenings held across Mid Wales. Village halls are transformed into underground screening venues using Stiwdio Dyfi's (Lottery funded) portable projection equipment.

Stiwdio Dyfi steers our project to young adults18-30 years as we are an organisation led by young adults. A recent survey of over 50 young adults in Mid Wales highlighted a demand for advanced transferable skills training for potential employment in the arts. Socially, young adults expressed a need for activities that bring them together, addressing feelings of isolation. Clwb Fideo is an initiative to address these needs. The results of the latest survey are available at https://www.stiwdiodyfi.org/news/6553e10a69931100013d736a.

Stiwdio Dyfi's three directors are professional filmmakers, and the Advisory Board includes 10 more professionals based in Mid Wales. The current Clwb Fideo membership comprises 25 individuals with varying skill levels. Laura Ashley funding will enhance the project for existing members and support aims to surpass 100 members by the end of 2025.

The project has informally operated for over a year, we are in the process of formalisation of our membership and structuring whilst working to secure grant funding to support regular, ongoing activity. This is in response to demand, building on the achievements to date and the interest uncovered. In the past 18 months, the group has organised over 30 workshops, including a film school programme for 18-30 year olds and weekly sessions with Ysgol Bro Hyddgen’s LGBTQI+ lunchtime group. Funding form the Ashley Foundation will further improve Clwb Fideo services, expanding workshops and access to a community of like minded individuals and equipment to be creative with.

Clwb Fideo will enable people with an interest in filmmaking, a way of developing that interest collaboratively. We're inspired by the successes of the Nottingham and London Film Cooperatives.

An important part of filmmaking is screening, using our portable cinema set up we will screen works by Clwb Fideo regularly creating as regular, meet up and networking space for our members. We will also run curated non member screening events open to local communities to attend. Sos Coch Sinema has been our primary way of reach new audiences.

Stiwdio Dyfi will be monitoring the impact of the grant through regular surveys and evaluation processes. An official steering committee will be formed from our membership.

What other project funding do you have in place or intend to apply for? Please state if secured, pending or planned? (50 words or less):	Clwb Fideo originated from the Lottery Community Awards for All project, Digidol Dyfi Digital (https://www.stiwdiodyfi.org/digidoldyfidigital). We have applied for additional funding from the Lottery. Recently, we secured a £3,000 grant from Powys Association for Voluntary Organisations to purchase some entry level equipment.
If this project is ongoing, how do you plan to fund the project after any grant from AFF comes to an end? (50 words or less):	We expect the project to continue well after the project funding runs out. We will source new funding to purchase any additional equipment and pay for more masterclasses. Once funding has run out we will also introduce a monthly membership fee so that our core overheads such as insurance and storage are covered.

AF: Who will be the beneficiaries?:

CF: The beneficiaries will mainly be young adults 18-30 as Stiwdio Dyfi aims it's activities towards this age group as there is a gap in provision in mid Wales for this demographic. Within this demographic, the project is most attractive to creatives and those interested in digital technology.

AF: Where will the beneficiaries be?:	Wales-Wide

CF: Number of beneficiaries?: We expect to reach well over 100 members by the end of the two years. However we expect a great more people to benefit than just our members through screenings in the community and other activity.

William Tremlett

Will Tremlett is a filmmaaker and producer from Machynlleth. Dyma'r hyn a ysgrifennwyd!

NL: What would you like to do?

DDD: Digidol Dyfi Digital is our bilingual digital skills community; and we need further awards for all funding to keep up with demand and support the next stage of development. We are run by our members for the benefit of our members and the local community. Our work makes the digital accessible to local people in the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere with facilities and resources that allow for digital skills learning in a fun and nurturing setting. Our workshops; bookable equipment; and events bring our bilingual local community closer together. Our project is administered and monitored by Stiwdio Dyfi CIC. Digidol Dyfi Digital is a resource for everyone in the Dyfi Biosphere who wishes to improve their digital skills and find both local and global audiences with digital projects; be it through radio; coding; video; DJ nights; or screening events. It is a place where bilingual culture; debate; and issues can engage with the local community in an accessible and inclusive way using digital technology. Our digital project gives us a sense of purpose in a locality which has little digital provision. Our project contributes towards the sense of local identity and pride as the creative talent of local people is showcased far and wide. We work with local schools; Youth Clubs; and the Scout to run workshops with young people so that future generations can benefit. We use press; social media; and our newsletter to advertise; and feedback forms to improve our project. We've run over a hundred workshops and events this year. We expect to grow our activity over the next 12 months through purchasing more high quality digital equipment that can be booked out for use in the local community. For a write-up on our project so far; see our blog post: https://www.stiwdiodyfi.org/news/65328c5c69931100013d71ee

NL: How does your project meet at least one of our funding priorities?

DDD: Covid-19 made it difficult for many to have a healthy social life. Digidol Dyfi Digital has been a project that strengthened our community ties through the digital post-Covid. We bring Welsh and English-speaking communities together through bilingual activity. We run regular digital skills workshops such as DJing; music production; journalism; community cinema events; video making; and more. These workshops have been important in making our project accessible and inclusive to all who wish to be involved but perhaps don’t have the technical knowledge or confidence yet. All of our workshops are free; helping more people reach their untapped potential locally in a time where costs are higher than ever. Our events are are offered at an cost price (£5 standard; £3 concession); and we book venues in villages to run events that local people can walk to. Our DJ nights are by donation.

NL: How does your project involve your community?

DDD: As members of the local community; we are constantly communicating the project through informal discussions; consultations; social media; local press coverage; and via a bilingual newsletter. We have a reach of approximately 3;000 people via our online outlets. Our feedback forms help us discover what people think about our activity so that we can improve and develop. We engage with local councils; enterprises; organizations; and other community projects. We have reached 86 members thanks to the previous lottery funding we received. We set up steering groups that any member can join for each specific activity of Digidol Dyfi Digital. Radio Dyfi; Clwb Fideo; Swn Dyfi Sound; and Sos coch Sinema all have this; and anyone can join the steering groups. We run induction days and open days so that people know how to engage with our project and use our digital equipment. Our project is run by members from our local community; for our local community. We're starting a digital movement in this part of Wales that is accessible to all.

UPDATE: Sadly we were not successful with this as the lottery community fund thought we were not ready with our application. We have found other ways to keep the project going since and hope to re-apply to the lottery in the future for a new project instead.

Cymraeg:

Trwy Stiwdio Dyfi, mae Digidol Dyfi Digital wedi gwneud cais am ail swm o arian Cymunedol Loteri.
